The village of West Jefferson swarmed with rock stars over Labor Day weekend.

The 64th annual Ox Roast kicked off with its annual parade, with this year’s theme as “Rock Star.” The theme was displayed by the many different representatives from several county and community festivals from around Ohio.

This year’s grand marshal, Susan Maggard, the director of the Good Samaritan Food Pantry located in the West Jefferson United Methodist Church, led the parade. Mayor Darlene Steele and members of the village council also escorted the parade through the route.

Veterans of World War II, along with the honor guard, followed closely behind, proudly displaying the colors of the United States. When the veterans approached the middle of town, they stopped and saluted the American flag as the West Jefferson High School marching band played the National Anthem.

Many different festivals throughout Ohio were represented by the royalty courts, each one displaying their themes in a style complimenting the festival they were representing. Various other organizations, ranging from local churches to Big Boy and Mr. Flyer from Flyer’s Pizza, participated in the parade.

The 2013 Ox Roast Royalty hosted an appreciation luncheon Saturday afternoon for the visiting royalty. The theme was “Frozen” which was displayed throughout the auditorium of the school. The royalty was greeted by photo shoot booths where they could pose with their own royalty, along with royalty from other locations, with a beautifully decorated cake.

During the opening ceremony of the luncheon, the 2014 Ox Roast Little Miss, Jr. Miss, and Miss Queen Contestants were introduced as they were escorted into the luncheon by their parents.
