The arrival of the Labor Day weekend allowed a number of Madison County sports teams to take a break, but there were a handful that found themselves in the heat of competition over the weekend.
The Jonathan Alder boys and girls cross country teams traveled around the I-270 outer belt to Westerville to run in the Westerville North Cross Country Classic Saturday, Aug. 30.
The Pioneers girls team didn’t have enough runners to register a team score, so the four girls competing ran as individuals.
The top finisher among the foursome was junior Taylor Gaerke, who finished second in the Division II-III race, doing so in a time of 23:41.16. She finished behind Emily Howard of Worthington Christian (22:16.59).
Other Alder runners included junior Morgan Foster (sixth, 27:18.95), freshman Rena Kirts (eighth, 28:14.98) and junior Kaylee Griest (ninth, 28:31.04).
The Pioneers boys team had enough runners to register a team score in the D-II-III race, scoring 36 points and finishing behind Worthington Christian (22).
Senior Jacob Somwaru placed fourth (19:25.43) and fellow senior Anthony Dresvyannikov was fifth (19:56.76).
Other Pioneers competing included freshman Cole Schrock (10th, 21:35.53), freshman Ethan Cox (13th, 22:21.35), sophomore Jack Berry (16th, 22:34.44), senior David Salzer (17th, 22:59.51), freshman Bryce Potts (18th, 23:01.25) and freshman Josh Ellis (19th, 30:14.31).
