METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Surveillance video from a warehouse in suburban New Orleans captures the fatal shooting of a man who appears to have pointed a gun at a pursuing sheriff’s deputy.
A Wednesday news release from Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s spokesman Col. John Fortunato said the shooting happened as deputies responded to calls just before midnight Tuesday of suspicious activity on the Interstate 10 service road in Metairie, near a new car storage lot. The reports said two people “appeared to be rolling shiny objects down the street,” the release said.
Deputies spotted a man running toward a garage in a nearby building. Deputy David Dalton pursued him.
The building is a warehouse for The Times-Picayune newspaper. Video posted on the Nola.comThe Times-Picayune website shows the suspect entering, later followed by the deputy. The video is somewhat blurry but appears to show the suspect twice raising a gun before being shot.
“As Dalton pursued the suspect entering, he turned facing Dalton and pointed a handgun at him,” the news release said. “Dalton drew his service weapon and fired six shots at him. The suspect collapsed and was pronounced dead on the scene.”
The release says the suspect was armed with a 9 mm handgun. He was identified as a black male. Dalton’s race was not immediately released.
Deputies searching the vehicle lot discovered a new pickup truck on blocks with two wheels missing.
Jefferson Sheriff Newell Normand scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference Wednesday to release more information about the shooting.
